Tiger Women's Golf Finishes in a Tie for First at Texas A&M Mo-Morial

March 3, 2004

Cypress, Texas - The University of Missouri women's golf squad made a great showing at the Texas A&M Mo-Morial finishing in a tie for first with Kansas State on Tuesday. Kansas State would go on to win the team by one shot in a 5 person play-off on the 18th hole.

Mizzou has now placed in the top five in five of the seven tournaments they have played in dating back to the fall season. This is their best finish of the spring so far after finishing in 12th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

The Tigers were led by junior Maria Ohlsson, who fired an even-par 72 in the final round on Tuesday and finished with a three-round total of 221. She entered the day in a tie for 6th after the first two rounds on Monday, but made the jump with some outstanding play in the final round.

"Our kids did a great job of battling out there and coming up with some big shots in the clutch," head coach Stephanie Cooper said. "We need to continue to build on this type of effort and compete the way we did on Monday and Tuesday."

Tiger stroke average leader and Moberly, Mo., native Denise Knaebel was also outstanding for Mizzou, finishing in a tie for 10th place. She opened the tourney well with a first round of 72, and then registered back-to-back 77's and finished with a 226, just four strokes out of the top 5. Knaebel has finished in the top 10 in four of the Tigers' seven tourney's so far this year.

Sophomore Kelli Strubinger (231) and junior Mindy Bullard (232) also both registered top 35 performances, finishing in 25th and 31st, respectively. Freshman Stephanie Wavro wrapped up the Tigers' scoring in 68th (241).

The tourney was played at the Par 72, Blackhorse Golf Club North Course in Cypress, Texas. Mizzou now shifts its attention to the Baylor Shootout, which will be played Mar. 19-21 in Boerne, Texas. For more information on Missouri Athletics, log on to www.mutigers.com.
