Following a solid weekend of play, senior Katka Sevcikova knocked off #37 ranked Dora Vastag of Indiana, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (3), to claim the "A" Singles Championship. Prior to knocking off Vastag in the flight final, Sevcikova bested LSU's Marina Chiarelli and Kansas State's Jessica Simosa. The victory marks the second championship crown Sevcikova has claimed this fall as she also won her respective Mizzou Invitational title.
Also claiming a singles title was freshman newcomer Charlotte Bellis. Bellis defeated Murray State's Whitney Robards (6-2, 6-4) to claim the D Singles Championship. On her way to the podium, Bellis also defeated Iowa's Morgan Tuttle and Indiana's Tami McQueen.
In the finals of the C flight, Erika Josbena was narrowly beaten by Indiana's Kara Zeder. In a nail-biting third set tie-breaker, Josbena reluctantly fell 4-6, 7-5, 9-11. Reaching the final match, Josbena bested Murray State's Christina Hall and LSU's Staten Spencer.
"We put ourselves in position to win all the finals and were able to come away with two of the three," said MU Head Coach Blake Starkey. "Katka's win over a highly ranked national opponent was (37th ranked Vastag) was great, and we are happy for her. Erika's match literally could have gone either way, and we could not be more pleased with the way she is playing. She's a fighter and we'll continue to see great things from her. And Charlotte got the job done as well. I was very pleased with the way we competed on Sunday."
The Tigers are idle until Oct. 21, when selected players travel to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the ITA Central Regional.
