Madison, Wis. - The Wisconsin Badgers (4-6, 0-1 Big Ten) beat the Missouri Tigers (8-4, 0-0 Big 12), 5-2, Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The Tigers finish the non-conference schedule, 8-4, and look to start the Big 12 season strong against No. 65 Colorado next Saturday (March 8) in Boulder, Colo.
But as for today's match, the Badgers were able to win the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 2, and then they took the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches, to win, 5-2.
"We just came up a little bit short at No. 1 doubles, and we had a couple of mismatches in the singles lineup," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "Credit Wisconsin, they played well today, it just wasn't there for us."
This is Mizzou's third loss against a Big Ten team this season, and fourth on the road.
"We just need to put it all together. We are close, and we are playing good teams, but I think as the season goes on, these kinds of matches will help us."
The Tigers earned their two points by winning the No. 2 and No. 5 singles spots.
Mizzou Junior Jessica Giuggioli got off to a slow start, as Emese Kardhordo took a close first set, 7-5. Giuggioli came back to win the second, 6-2, to even the match at a set apiece. Because the team match was decided before they started the third set, they played a 10-point tiebreaker. It was close, but Giuggioli prevailed, 12-10, for her second win of the weekend, and 10th of the spring.
Tiebreakers were not just for singles, today. Giuggioli and partner Kaitlyn Ritchie won, 8-7 (7-4), at No. 3 doubles, taking home Mizzou's only doubles win of the day. Ritchie is 18-4 going back to the fall, an .818 winning percentage.
Freshman Maureen Modesto earned her 19th singles win of the season, also dating back to the fall, and she had an easy time doing it. She beat Wisconsin's Morgan Tuttle, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
That would be the only winning for Mizzou, Sunday, however. At No. 1 singles, Elizabeth Carpenter beat Mallory Weber in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 3, Katya Mirnova defeated Chrissy Svetlic, 6-1, 6-3, to end her winning streak at nine. At No. 4, UW's Jessica Seyferth beat Kaitlin Dunham, 6-3, 6-2, and Ritchie fell at No. 6.
Mizzou's top two doubles teams, Weber and Svetlic and Dunham and Ayala, lost their matches.
