Second-Ranked Baylor Defeats Mizzou, 5-2

Waco, Texas - The second-ranked Baylor Lady Bears (19-2/4-0 Big 12) defeated the Missouri Tigers (9-8/1-4 Big 12), 5-2, Sunday afternoon in Waco, Texas. Mizzou won two singles matches, at No. 5 and No. 6, but it was too little too late, as the Lady Bears took the first four singles matches to earn their 19th victory of the season.
The match started with singles action because of the threat of rain in the Waco area, and the Lady Bears quickly decided the match by taking the Nos. 1-4 singles matches, each in straight sets.
At No. 1, No. 23 Zuzana Zemenova defeated Mizzou junior Jessica Giuggioli, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2, Baylor's 11th-ranked Lenka Broosova beat Mallory Weber, 6-1, 6-0. BU's 62nd-ranked Jana Bielikova defeated Mizzou's Chrissy Svetlic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. And at No. 4, Jelena Stanivuk beat Mizzou sophomore Kaitlin Dunham, 6-1, 6-1.
After Baylor clinched their match, a couple of Tigers earned solid victories.
Kaitlyn Ritchie defeated Zuzana Chmelarova, 6-4, 2-6, (10-7), at No. 5 singles, to win her third-straight Big 12 singles match, and 10th of the spring.
And at No. 6, Sofia Ayala defeated Natalie Holmes in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Baylor won all three doubles matches after the team match was decided. At No. 1, the fourth-ranked Baylor duo of Zemenova and Broosova beat Svetlic and Weber, 8-0. At No. 2, Jana Bielikova and Chmelarova beat Dunham and Ayala, 8-4, and Stanivuk and Holmes beat Modesto and Giuggioli, 8-4.
The Tigers will return to Columbia after this road trip to prepare for two more tough conference tests, as No. 33 Texas A&M and No. 17 Texas will invade the Green Tennis Center next weekend. Friday (April 4) the Tigers and Aggies will tangle at 1 pm and Saturday (April 5) Mizzou and UT will face off at 11 am. Admission to both matches is free to the public.
