Tigers move to 4-2, 1-2 in SEC
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Kelvin Taylor ran for 99 yards and two scores as the 11th-ranked Florida Gators left Memorial Stadium with a 21-3 win over Mizzou on Saturday night.
A Homecoming crowd of 70,767 saw a battle of freshman quarterbacks that was dominated by the defenses for most of the game. Redshirt frosh Will Grier threw for 208 yards for the Gators (6-0, 4-0 SEC), but was sacked five times by a Mizzou defense that forced six three-and-out drives, nine punts overall, and had a 10th drive end on downs on a fake field-goal attempt. True freshman Drew Lock threw for 151 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Linebackers Kentrell Brothers (15) and Michael Scherer (10) each tallied double-digit tackles for the third time.
The Gators scored on the game's opening drive, going 75 yards in 12 plays and capped by a 1-yard run by Taylor. The Tigers (4-2, 1-2) responded on the ensuing possession, scoring on Andrew Baggett's 21-yard field goal. After Taylor's second 1-yard TD run less than 14 minutes in, the defenses took over. The Tigers allowed Florida just 92 second-half yards, but Jalen Tabor's 40-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter accounted for the final result.
"We're not offense/defense around here. We're one team," said Head Coach Gary Pinkel. "The good news is, we are playing good defense, but we're having our struggles on offense, and it's my job to fix that. Turnovers hurt us, and that's what we have to deal with, and we have to improve. They just out-executed us."
The Tigers were 0-for-13 on 3rd down until a 12-yard Chase Abbington run in the final minute of the game.
Mizzou is back in action next Saturday night at Georgia, and is next at Faurot Field on Thursday, Nov. 5, when the Tigers host Mississippi State.
