COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis saw four more wins on the second day of the Mizzou Invite, held Friday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
The Tigers retured to their winning ways in the doubles session, paced by a 6-4 triumph for the veteran duo of sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) over Memphis' Claire Sullivan and Josephine Cao. Mizzou's newcomer team of sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) won by the same score over Kansas State's Meghan King and Ines Mesquita.
In the singles session, Raley notched her second straight-sets win in as many tries on the weekend, besting Ting-Ya Hsu of Wichita State, 6-0, 6-2. Nash also went 2-0 on the day, fighting back for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 win over the Shockers' Gabriela Porubin.
WHAT HE SAID
"We started well in doubles, and to see Amina and Marta play their first match together was cool, seeing two aggressive players feeling each other out. I was pleased to see the energy out there," said head coach Colt Gaston. "As a coach, you want to see that with our doubles, and to see it follow through in singles, to continue to put ourselves in opportunities to win against good teams, that's what you always want to start your season with. We have a lot to build on, and a long way to go and the girls know that, but it's something they're excited about, so that was something that made me happy today, for sure.
"Any time Clare is catching a rhythm, she's a dangerous player, and this is one of those times that she's put three or four matches together. She'll continue to build and do good things for this program. We're a young team, and any time you have a young team, you're working on a lot of different things, making changes here and there, doing everything you can to help this team be the best they can be in January (when the dual season begins). So these tournaments are great since we can bring three solid teams in to our place and work on a ton of different things."
SCHEDULE CHANGE
Play concludes Saturday with a revised schedule from the originally announced pairings. All four teams will face off in doubles action at 9 a.m. at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, with Memphis and Wichita State wrapping up their tournaments with a singles matchup at 10 a.m. Mizzou and Kansas State will then complete tournament play with singles matches beginning approximately at Noon.
