Tigers get singles wins from Oliveira, Wright
BATON ROUGE, La. – The Mizzou Tennis team got a pair of singles wins, but No. 43 LSU was able to secure a 4-2 win Saturday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.
Following a 30-minute weather delay that forced competition inside, Missouri (11-8, 0-5 SEC) went into an early hole after LSU won the doubles point with a sweep of the first two doubles matches.
Yet Mizzou twice tied the match up with singles wins. Freshman Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) earned her second straight win, and first in SEC play, with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Moments later, freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) tied the match at 2-all with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Mizzou was able to force third sets on Courts 1 and 5, but LSU (12-4, 3-3 SEC) was able to pick up a pair of wins to close out the match.
"Tough one for us today. The girls played their hearts out in singles after a rough start in doubles, and as a coach that shows me a lot about these Tigers!", said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "We have to keep competing and fighting at that level, and most importantly stick with the process. We look forward to getting back at it and building next week."
