AMES, IOWA -- The University of Missouri gymnastics team didn't win Tuesday night's meet but their score of 194.525 - the highest of the season and third-highest in school history - will mightily aid their drive to qualify for a berth in the NCAA Region 3 Championships, April 1, in Tucson, Ariz.
The No. 13 Iowa State Cyclones won the meet, 197.275-194.525.
"I'm really proud of our team," MU Coach Rob Drass said. "We put things together and hit as a team and I hope we'll see more of the same the next two meets. The girls came to compete tonight and showed that they want to control their own destiny in qualifying for Regionals." For the second time this season, Missouri didn't count a fall in its team score.
Tuesday's meet score was important to the Tigers because it gives them another high road score to figure into the regional qualifying formula.
Senior Shannon Brown led the way for Mizzou, tying her career high with a score of 39.15 in the all-around, which placed her second behind Iowa State's Betsy Hamm (39.6). Brown tied her season best on vault (9.65), and went 9.8 on bars, and 9.85 on balance beam and floor exercise. She tied for sixth place on bars and tied for fourth on beam.
Katie Cole equalled her career high in tying Iowa State's Sarah Sanderson for first place on the vault with a score of 9.825.
The Tigers continue on the road at Texas Woman's University on Sunday. Utah State will also compete in the three-way meet. Mizzou will be back in Ames, March 18, for the Big 12 Conference championships.
