Winston-Salem, N.C.-The University of Missouri women's soccer team is 4-3 after a 2-1 come from behind victory over Virginia Tech in their first game of the Wake Forest Invitational. The Tigers and the Hokies battled through a tight game, where VT only outshot MU 18-17. Mizzou recorded nine shots on goal and relied on the Tiger goalkeeping staff to make 10 saves.
The Tigers got off to a slow start, although they found a steady rhythm and good ball movement early on in the game, they gave up a Hokie goal in the first fifteen minutes of the match to leave the half with a 1-0 deficit. Despite the score, Mizzou and Virginia Tech were dead even in the offensive both taking eight shots including four shot on goal.
Missouri returned to the second half with a fire scoring its first goal within three minutes of retaking the field. Junior Steph Brennan takes credit for the score after taking a shot from the top right corner of the box. The ball was tipped by a Hokie defender and put in the net to tie the game 1-1.
Senior Amy Timmermann put in the Tigers game winner. Mizzou brought the ball into scoring range with a series of quick one-touch passes. Timmermann passed a ball to midfielder Suzy Probst who took a direct shot that was deflected by the Tech keeper. Before the goalie could recover, Timmermann slammed the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
Although Virginia Tech ripped off 18 shots, the Mizzou defense kept the Hokies to just 11 shots on goal. Defender Dyana Russell completely shutdown VT scoring leader Victoria Sarfo-Kanta and forward Larissa Johnson. Of the three forwards that Russell marked, only Meghan Foy got off two shots in the game. Russell also recorded a team save.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk earns her first win of the season. The freshman entered the game at the half and defended the goal against six shots. Fellow freshman Megan Duncan started the game for the Tigers playing the first 45 minutes. She recorded four saves and one goal allowed.
Missouri continues play in the Wake Forest Invitational Sun., Sept. 17 at 11:30 a.m. when they face California.
