MU Wrestlers Fall To #2 Iowa State, 31-9

Ames, Iowa - The University of Missouri wrestling team fought hard Friday night, but came up on the losing end of a 31-9 decision to the No. 2-ranked Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. MU's record dropped to 10-9, while Iowa State, the NWCA National Duals champions, improved to 17-2.
"The match scores don't tell the story of what a battle this was," Missouri Head Coach BRIAN SMITH said afterward. "We were right in some close matches and couldn't close the deal. Our guys know that they should have had a couple more victories."
Senior JEFF URBAN (149) won his 12th consecutive match with a 7-1, upset victory over No. 10 Billy Maldonado of Iowa State. Urban, ranked No. 16, entering weekend competition, outscored his opponent 7-0 in the third and final period to take the upset victory. He is now 28-8 overall, 15-4 in duals, and will face No. 1-ranked Tony Davis of Northern Iowa on Sunday.
Missouri's KEVIN HERRON (197) got a pin victory for MU's other win, over Iowa State backup Nick Britton. The bout was tied, 7-7 when Herron pinned Britton with just five seconds remaining in the second period. Herron is now 23-8 and has won 13 of his last 14 dual bouts.
Top-20 Tigers JOHN KOPNISKY (174) and JEREMY SPATES (141) lost rugged matches to Cyclones wrestlers. Spates dropped an 8-6 decision to No. 12 Sonny Marchette and Kopnisky lost an 11-5 bout to No. 19 Perry Parks. Spates is now 27-9 on the season, Kopnisky is 28-4. Both Tigers will have another go at ranked opponents on Sunday versus Northern Iowa.
Speaking of Sunday, the Tigers will be back in action on Sunday as the guests of the No.9-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The dual begins at 2 p.m.
