Columbia, Mo.-- Freshman Lindsay Davis, who is also known as "D" by her teammates, recorded a career-high 9.800 on the balance beam picking up the beam championship of the 2001 State Farm Cat Classic individual championship held on Saturday night in the Hearnes Center. Assistant Coach Kira Atkinson, who works predominately on beam, said that Davis' business-like approach is the key to her consistency.
"This performance is representative of the way Lindsay works," Atkinson said. "She works hard and is consistent in the gym and that approach has paid off in competition."
Davis set or tied career-high marks on all four events this weekend and set a new freshman all-around record last night with her score of 38.900. The other Tiger competitors did not fair as well with only one other Tiger placing higher than sixth on any event tonight. However, several competitors had big meets last night as Mizzou took second place honors in the team competition behind BYU. Sophomore Leah Gremaud tied a school record on beam on Friday with her 9.925 routine.
With the team competition held last night, the competitors were able to focus on their own individual routines. Scores did not go toward a team total and gymnasts were more likely to break out some of the big tricks they had in their repertoire.
Friday's all-around champion, Kelly Parkinson from BYU, picked up individual championships on both vault and floor while ISU's Michelle Huston won the bars competition. The Tigers will get re-aquatinted with BYU in two weeks as Mizzou travels to Provo to take on the Cougars.
Head Coach Rob Drass said that he was very pleased with the 2001 installment of the Classic and also with the remarkable consistency of Lindsay Davis.
"It was a great weekend with four very talented teams who really went after each other," Drass said. "I was very excited for Lindsay tonight. She has been fabulous the past three meets and she has a chance to make a great name for herself here at Missouri."
The Tigers are now 3-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Big 12 conference. Mizzou is action once again next weekend as they welcome No. 19 Iowa State to the Hearnes Center at 2:00 p.m. for the 2001 AT&T Cable Gymnastics X-Treme. For ticket information, call 1-800-CAT PAWS.
