Women's Golf Slips to 4th Place at Big 12 Championships

April 25, 2001

Harvester, Iowa - The University of Missouri women's golf team, bidding for its first-ever conference championship, could not hold their second-round lead, and slipped to finish fourth at the 2001 Big 12 Championships, which wrapped up today at The Harvester Golf Club in Harvester, Iowa. The Tigers shot a team round of 321 Wednesday, the team's highest score in the tournament, and just the 10th-best team round of the day.

Head Coach Tom Loyd's squad held the tournament lead through each of the first two rounds, but could not close out on top. The fourth-place finish does equal MU's previous best showings in the Big 12 Championships, tying fourth-place finishes in both 1997 and 2000.

Senior Amelia Moses came oh-so-close to defending her 2000 Big 12 individual title, but was defeated in a three-way sudden-death playoff on the first hole by Oklahoma State's Maria Boden. Boden, Moses and Lisa Meldrum of Oklahoma finished regulation play tied at 227. Boden sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to earn the win. Moses began the day alone in first place, three strokes ahead of Boden and four in front of Meldrum. She started strong, parring her first six holes on Wednesday, before suffering bogeys on four of her next six holes. Moses recovered to go one-under par in her last six holes, including a birdie on the par-three 14th.

Senior Jamie Tucker finished in a tie for 13th place with a three-round total of 237. Tucker, who began the day tied for second, shot a 10-over par 82 Wednesday. She bogeyed three of her final four holes, including a costly triple-bogey eight on the par-five 15th hole. Sophomore Elin Ohlsson tied for 25th after a nine-over par 81 Wednesday left her with a three-round total of 241 for the tournament. Ohlsson, who improved on her finish of 45th from a year ago, had a rough finishing stretch as well, as she bogeyed her final three holes Wednesday.

Junior Nisha Sadekar birdied two of her first three holes today, but ended 11-over par for a round of 83 which left her with a three-round total of 245. A triple-bogey six on the par-three 17th was costly for Sadekar, who ended tied for 32nd place - just off her best finish at the Big 12's of 27th in 1999.

Senior Jill Rosen rounded out the Tiger lineup, as she finished in 58th place overall, with a three-round total of 245. Rosen shot a round of 90 Wednesday, and was nine-over par in her last four holes.

Missouri hopes to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional for the fourth straight year. Regional bids are handed out Monday, April 30th.
