Sept. 29, 2002
Columbia, Mo.-The Mizzou soccer team picked up its second tie of the 2002 season following its fifth overtime match of the year. The Tigers battled the Colorado Buffaloes to a 2-2 standstill to bring their season mark to 5-3-2, with a 0-1-1 tally in Big 12 Conference play.
Missouri and Colorado battled through the majority of the first half without much excitement. The Buffaloes quickly changed the pace of the game when Meghan Swanzy took a long shot from 40-yards out. Although poised to make a routine save, MU keeper Megan Duncan let the ball slip through her fingers and score, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead going into the half.
Returning to the field, it was apparent Mizzou Coach Bryan Blitz's half time message hit home. Just over a minute on the field, the Tigers rallied back to tie the game and rebalance the scoreboard. Melissa Peabody chipped a ball into the center of the Colorado box where Adriene Davis skilfully launched her penetrating shot.
Colorado wasn't about to let up their charge however, as the Buffaloes came barrelling back to put another goal on the scoreboard just four minutes later. Jennifer Thais sent a ball through the Missouri defensive line where Fran Munnelly collected it for a goal.
Even despite the deficit, Missouri came back with its standard never say die attitude. With relentless pursuit, following 10 shots in the second half, the Tigers finally capitalized on the Colorado box. Senior Suzy Probst stripped the ball from a Colorado player with a sharp slide sending the ball through to Amber Swinehart. The forward made use of her moment to score her fourth goal of the year.
The scoreboard remained deadlocked through the remainder of regulation play and again through two sudden-death overtime periods giving Missouri its second and Colorado its first tie of the season.
Overall, Mizzou only outshot Colorado 23-to-22. The Tigers did manage to make nine shots on goal, while holding the Buffaloes to seven. Megan Duncan played all 110 minutes in goal for Missouri. She allowed two goals and made five saves bringing her season mark to 5-3-2. Playing 65 minutes in CU's box, goalkeeper Sara Erskine allowed two goals and made four saves to bring her record to 1-1-1.
Missouri continues Big 12 Conference play next weekend when the Tigers face Texas Tech and Baylor on the road.
