Missouri Advances to Semifinals of Virginia Duals

Missouri advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Virginia in the first round 32-14. Sophomore Scott Barker picked up his seventh pin in his last eight matches as he pinned his opponent in only :41. Sophomore J.P. Reese also recorded a pin for Mizzou in the 141-pound weight class.
Other Tigers picking up wins against Virginia were junior Mark Bader in the 125-pound class, freshman Chris McCormick (133 pounds), senior Jesse Jordan (149 pounds), redshirt freshman Tyron Woodley (165 pounds) and senior John Kopnisky (174 pounds).
In the quarterfinals, the Tigers downed North Carolina 37-9. Barker picked up another quick pin, this time in only :50. Reese also recorded his second pin of the day and Kevin Herron had a pin.
Other MU victories came from Jeremy Spates (149 pounds), Kenny Burleson (157 pounds), Jesse Jordan (165 pounds), John Kopnisky (174 pounds) and Dante Stone (174 pounds).
Missouri is now 8-0 on the season in duals. The last time MU started the season with eight straight wins was the 1967-68 season when it won its first 15 duals and finished the season with a record of 18-0-1.
The semifinals of the Virginia Duals will start at 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday. Penn State defeated Appalachian State 38-0 and Army 27-9 in the first two rounds of the tournament. The other semifinal match will feature Hofstra and Kent State . The winners will advance to the finals Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. CST.
"We match up well with Penn State," MU coach Brian Smith said. "They are a tough team and it should be a good match, but it is one we should win if we wrestle well."
