LINCOLN, Neb. -
The 2002-03 Missouri women's swimming and diving team are starting the season where they left off last season; undefeated. Last year the Tigers finished with a perfect 9-0 record in dual meets and continued its streak with a 158-142 upset of Texas A&M. The Aggies, considered one of the top programs in the country did not have an answer for Mizzou's depth and experience.
The Tigers started the meet on a good note with the team of Sarah Lo, Tiffany Bohon, Liz Schoborg and Andrea Nigh winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.51). Then preceded to win the next two events (1,000 freestyle and the 200 medley relay). By the end of the day the Tigers would win 10 of the possible 16 events from the Aggies to pull off the upset.
Nigh led the team with 4 first place finishes. Along with her victory in the 200 free relay she teamed up with senior Ellen Cross, freshman Liz Schoborg and sophomore Lindsay Palbykin in the 400 freestyle relay to end the meet much like the Tigers started it; with a victory. Nigh also placed first in both the 50 (24.05) and 100 freestyles (52.43).
Junior Rebecca Wolfe, who transferred from Nebraska two years ago, returned to Lincoln to win three events. She won the 200 butterfly (2:03.90), the 500 freestyle (5:03.34) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:17.31). Wolfe's time in the 1,000 free is the fourth fastest in school history and set a new career best for her in that event, despite only swimming that event twice in her career as a Tiger.
Liz Schoborg showed she was ready for big-time collegiate action, adding her first collegiate individual victory in the 100 butterfly (57.38) to go with her two relay victories. Senior Katy Chandler won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.89 to round out the Tiger champions.
Other top individual performers included Sarah Lo placing second in the 100 backstroke (57.98) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:06.46). Megan Morford finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.18. Leslie Hoh finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.45).
The diving team had a impressive showing. Sophomore Anna Massey finished first in the 3-meter board (245.40) followed by teammate Amanda Maret with a score of 231.95. In the 1-meter board Maret finished second (229.75) and Massey finished third (227.65).
The team will next compete at the Illinois Invite in Champaign, Illinois on Saturday October 26. They will compete with host Illinois, Michigan State and Southern Illinois.
NOTES: The women's team defeated host Nebraska by the score of 228-82 on Saturday
