Palm Harbor, Fla. - In a day full of unbelievable efforts and career-best scores, the University of Missouri women's golf squad fired a 292 in the final day of the adidas Fall Invitational, finishing the tourney in second place behind Baylor by only one stroke. The Tigers were down by six strokes heading into Tuesday's final round in the tournament that was played at the par-72, 5,844 yard Lansbrook Golf Course in Palm Harbor, Fla.
"We played really well today and made a great run at a win," head coach Stephanie Cooper said. "I was extremely pleased with the way we competed and I like where our team is at right now. We still have room to improve, but we are making great shots and playing with some confidence."
The round of 292 was only one stroke away from the lowest team 18 registered in school history and the Tigers 54-hole total of 889 was also only one stroke away from the lowest team 54-hole total in MU history. The second place finish was the Tigers third Top 5 finish in four tournaments played so far this fall.
Five Tigers finished in the top 16 in the tournament including top-MU finisher and sophomore Kelli Strubinger, who shot a career-low 54 of 222. Strubinger shot a final round of 73 to finish in a tie for eighth after shooting rounds of 72 and 77 in the first two days. Finishing right behind Strubinger in a tie for 10th place was junior Mindy Bullard, who was unbelievably consistent with rounds of 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 223, which equaled here career best 54-hole total.
Finishing right behind Bullard was sophomore Denise Knaebel and freshman Stephanie Wavro in a tie for 12th place. Knaebel had her best round of the tourney with a 73 giving her a three-round total of 224. Wavro had a spectacular career-opening tournament shooting a final round of 73 and a 54-hole total of 224. Junior Maria Ohlsson recovered from a second-round 79 to shoot a 73 in the final round finishing in a tie for 16th.
