Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri senior golfer Maria Ohlsson already owned the school record for the lowest individual 54-hole total after her unbelievable 215 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout last fall. Ohlsson etched her name in the record books once again on Saturday, shooting a Mizzou all-time best six-under par 66 in the second round of the Lady Northern Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich.
After finishing the first round in 17th place with a 75, Ohlsson was absolutely fabulous in the second round moving into the tourney lead heading into Sunday's final round. The native of Sweden recorded seven birdies in her final round, but finished the day with a bogey on hole #3, just missing a chance to finish the day at seven under. Her efforts combined with outstanding outings from junior Denise Knaebel (73-72=145 - T-3rd) and senior Mindy Bullard (73-73=146 - T-5th) have the Tigers tied for the lead with tournament host Michigan at 585.
"I didn't have any birdies in the first round this morning so I went out in the afternoon and relaxed and played well," Ohlsson said. "It was great having my teammates also playing well and we need to come ready to go tomorrow for the final round."
The Tigers were on fire in the second round shooting a one-under par 287, the second lowest 18-hole total in school history. The round, which featured an amazing 22 birdies from Mizzou players, was the best team round of the tournament so far by four strokes (Michigan shot a 291 in the second round) and has the Tigers in position to win their fourth tournament title under head coach Stephanie Cooper.
Knaebel, who recorded five birdies in the second round, finished the day in a tie for 3rd with a total of 145 through two rounds. Bullard was very consistent in her approach, firing two rounds of 73 to finish the second round in a tie for 5th. Sophomore Stephanie Wavro had a solid first day, finishing in a tie for 30th at 153, just five strokes out of the top 10. Freshman Madde Augustsson started the day shot two rounds of 80 to finish the day in a tie for 60th while sophomore Lyndsey Adams checked in with a 167 after the first day of competition.
