Parrish, Fla. - The University of Missouri women's golf team got its 2005 spring season off to an outstanding start, as Head Coach Stephanie Cooper's squad claimed the team championship in the Central District Invitational, which wrapped up today at the River Wilderness Golf Club, in Parrish, Fla.
Mizzou won the 54-hole event with a final round team score of 292 on Tuesday. The Tigers' three-round total of 879 broke a school record for lowest 54-hole total. It was also the Tigers' fourth tournament championship under Cooper who was pleased with the solid start the Tigers are off to.
"We played with poise and really controlled the tournament from wire to wire," Cooper said. "We talked all preseason about starting and finishing tournaments strong and I thought we did that for the most part the last two days."
Senior Maria Ohlsson led the way individually for Mizzou, as she shot rounds of 76-70-72 for a total of 218 to finish in a tie for fourth place. All four of her fellow Tiger teammates finished among the top-20 individually, including junior Kelli Strubinger (T-9th; 72-76-73=221), junior Denise Knaebel (T-12th; 73-73-76=222), sophomore Stephanie Wavro (T-12th; 71-76-75=222) and senior Mindy Bullard (T-16th; 76-76-72=224).
Mizzou led from wire-to-wire in the two-day tournament, and bested runner-up Arkansas by two shots. Finishing in third place was Baylor (892), followed by LSU (4th - 897) and Michigan (5th - 899) to round out the top five. Here's a complete team leaderboard for the tournament:
