LAS CRUCES, N.M. - - The Missouri women's golf team is in second place, just one shot out of the lead, after two rounds of play at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The Tigers shot a team score of 300 in round one and followed that with a second round 292 for a two-round total of 592. The 292 second-round score for Missouri was the best round of the afternoon among the 21-team field.
New Mexico leads the tournament at 591 after two rounds.
Senior Denise Munzlinger is tied for first place out of the 108 players in the tournament. Munzlinger followed an opening round 71 with a 69 in round two for a 36-hole total of 140. She is tied with Mikaela Backstedt of New Mexico who matched Munzlinger's rounds of 71 and 69.
"Denise played very poised, calm and relaxed today," Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "She hit some great shots and played like an athlete all day."
Joining Munzlinger in the top ten is junior Stephanie Wavro, who is tied for ninth with a two-round total of 148 (75-73). Sophomore Madde Augustsson (76-73=149) finished one shot behind Wavro and is in a tie for 14th place.
Senior Kelli Strubinger is tie for 50th spot (78-77=155) and freshman Ellen Hoeper is in a tie for 70th place (79-80=159) after the first two rounds.
"Stephanie and Madde both continued to play very consistent." Priesmeyer said. "As a team, we hit the ball well today and just need to make more putts. But we are in a position to win a tournament again and that is a good feeling."
The third and final round will be played on Tuesday.
