COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior forwards Amber Swinehart and Jennifer Nobis combined for the game's lone goal on Senior Day as the Missouri Tigers defeated the Colorado College Tigers 1-0 on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. In their last regular season home game of the season, the Tigers broke the single-season attendance record, set last season, with a total of 6,494 fans in 2005.
With the score stuck at 0-0 in the 85th minute, freshman midfielder Janelle Cordia played a ball upfield to Nobis, who ran toward the box. Nobis then passed a perfect ball on an oncoming Swinehart, who chipped her shot over Colorado College goalie Geneva Sills and into the net for a 1-0 Missouri lead. The assist was the 13th of the year for Nobis, which ties Missouri's single-season assist record.
"I knew the goal was going to come," said Missouri head coach Bryan Blitz. "After Friday's game, we needed to rebound. Colorado College is always scary, they beat Nebraska in Nebraska. We didn't know how our team would respond but they showed their true character today."
Missouri attacked early and often to start the game and earned a corner kick with only 33 seconds ticked off the clock. In the ninth minute, Nobis took a shot in the box with an open net but a Colorado College defender came out of nowhere and cleared the ball to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Another team save by Colorado College in the 34th minute again kept persistant Missouri squad off the scoreboard. Freshman defender Kat Tarr headed a corner kick from freshman defender Ashley Hamblin to the far post. Unfortunately, a Colorado College defender stationed on the post kicked the ball out to save a goal.
With ten minutes gone by in the second half, Missouri had another scoring opportunity as a ball played into the box eluded the hands of Sills and came loose in the box. With a defender at her side, junior midfielder Aria Hudetz reached the ball first and sent a shot toward the net. However, the Colorado College defender managed to get her foot on the shot and clear the ball. Missouri continued to attack until Swinehart netted the game-winner with only 5:34 remaining in the game.
Missouri outshot Colorado College 37-5 in the game, including 15-1 in the first half. The shutout marks the seventh for the Tigers this season and the fifth for Buehrig, who now has seven in her short career. Buehrig also recorded three saves in the game.
Prior to the match, Nobis and Swinehart and fellow seniors, defender Erica Pusch and goalkeeper Kira Reyes, were honored for their contributions to the Missouri soccer program.
Missouri closes out the regular season with a contest against Kansas on Friday, Oct. 28 in Lawrence, Kan. Currently in the eighth and final spot for the Big 12 Tournament, the Tigers hold a narrow one-point lead over ninth place Oklahoma State. The Tigers can clinch a spot in the conference playoffs with a win against Kansas or a Cowgirl loss or tie to Oklahoma.
