Missouri Wrestlers Continue Winning Ways

Morgantown, W. Va. - Improving to 4-0 on the season, the 12th-ranked Missouri wrestling team topped No. 24 West Virginia, 29-16, in Morgantown, W. Va., earning six victories through three falls, two major decisions and a one point decision victory.
Senior Austin DeVoe (Columbus, Kan.) started things off for the Tigers at 125 pounds, earning six team points after pinning opponent Scott Stuart in 4:38. The fall was DeVoe's fifth of the season and first in dual competition and provided him with his 60th career victory.
Also earning falls on the night were junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) at 174 pounds and sophomore Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) at 184-pounds. Ranked No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds, Askren dropped Mountaineer Kurt Brenner in 3:50 for his 15th fall of the season and 52nd career pin. Jordan followed Askren's act pinning Chance Litton in the third period (6:03). To date, Jordan holds a 15-4 record for the 2005-06 campaign and is ranked No. 17 in the nation.
"In this program you can always count on someone to step up when necessary," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "Austin and Raymond's pins really helped us out tonight against a talented West Virginia squad. Combine that with huge major decision wins by Matt Pell and Tyler McCormick and you can really see that our team is maturing and starting to progress in the right direction."
Currently ranked No. 4 in the nation at 165 pounds, junior Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) bested Eric Mullen, 10-1, after seven minutes on the mat. Earlier in the night, 15h-ranked Tyler McComrick (Leawood, Kan.) showed his strength, shutting out Seth Lisa, 9-0.
The evening's final match at heavyweight proved successful for Tiger true freshman Sean Connole (Erie, Penn.). Down to the final 30 seconds of action, Connole came through with two takedowns to outscore Dustin Rogers, 7-6.
The Tigers will have a five day break before traveling to Greensboro, N.C., for the Southern Scuffle, Dec. 28-29 in the Greensboro Coliseum.
