Cedar Falls, Iowa - Competing in the first round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 14, the No. 9 Missouri wrestling program lost its opening-round matchup, 24-21, to No. 18 Arizona State. Although each team garnered five victories in the dual, Arizona State picked up bonus points in every one of its wins to establish the margin of victory.
Entering the dual with a chance to break a pair of records he already held, junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) wasted no time rewriting a pair of Missouri marks at 174 pounds. Pinning Alex Pavlenko in 1:38, Askren recorded his 21st fall of the season to break the mark of 20 he set a year ago. The victory ran the No. 1 grappler's record to 27-0, snapping the standard for consecutive wins he established as a sophomore.
Wrestling at 133 pounds, sophomore Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) gave up two takedowns in the second period to fall behind 4-3 to Arizona State's Adam Hickey. Ranked No. 16 in the nation, McCormick was able to score on a reversal as the period came to a close and gain the advantage heading into the final two minutes. Dominating the final frame, McCormick added four more to his total, picking up the Tigers' first victory of the tournament.
Pushing the pace at 141 pounds with a series of shots, senior Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) connected with a single-leg takedown late in the first period to take an early lead over Jason Robbins. Although Robbins took McCormick down twice in the final two periods, the Tigers senior, ranked No. 19 in the nation, was able to escape his opponent's grasp three times and hold on for a 5-4 triumph.
Trailing Patrick Payne by three points after the first three minutes, sophomore Josh Wagner (Milton, Wis.) chose the down position to begin the second period. Turning the tables on his opponent, No. 17 Wagner scrambled his way to the advantage early in the second, then pinned Payne 25 seconds later to complete the turnaround.
Coming back from an early takedown by No. 11 Patrick Pitsch, No. 4 Matt Pell (junior, Luxemburg, Wis.) reeled off a seven-point scoring spree before allowing Pitsch to score on an escape. Taking a 7-3 advantage into the final period, Pitsch was abe to escape Pell's grasp for an extra point, but 1:21 of riding time gave Pell an 8-4 triumph.
The Tigers remain alive in the tournament, moving to the consolation bracket, where they will take on Kent State at 1 p.m. CST.triumph.
