Marable, Jordan and Askren Secure All-America Honors

March 21, 2008

St. Louis, Mo. - Junior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) and sophomores Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) and Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held in the Scottrade Center. The 2008 campaign marked the fourth time in five years that the Tigers crowned three All-Americans.  Jordan and Askren will begin their run at third place honors Saturday morning at 10 a.m., while Askren will challenge for seventh.

Wrestling at 165 pounds, Marable and Mark Perry of Iowa met at center circle on live TV (ESPNU).  The two grapplers last met Jan. 12 at the National Duals, with Perry winning a 3-2 decision in overtime.  Once again, Perry collected a win, today's coming by a score of 4-2.  Marable scored the first points of the match on a takedown seven seconds into the bout and allowed Perry an escape with 2:17 left in the period.  Perry chose down to start the second and escaped to tie the match at two.  Marable's choice came in the third period and the Tiger chose neutral, and was taken down on the edge of the mat with 13 seconds remaining.

Next up in the semifinals, Jordan suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime to Ohio State's second-seeded Mike Puccilo.  The two wrestlers were scoreless through the first period and Puccilo chose down to start the second, escaping in five seconds.  Jordan escaped in the third to tie the match and the two were forced into the first 30-second tie breaker after neither scored points in the one minute overtime period.  Jordan allowed Puccilo to escape on the option three seconds into the period and was unable take the Buckeye down.

Askren finished the night with a 1-1 record recording an opening-session win over Mike Tammilow, (Northwestern) 7-3.  The Tiger 197-pounder entered the second period down 2-0 but erased the Wildcats' lead by scoring an escape and takedown.  In the third, Askren allowed Tammilow an escape, but returned him to the mat and turned him for a two-point nearfall.  Wrestling for the second time of the evening, Askren suffered a 9-2 loss at the hands of Nebraska's Craig Brester,

First to the mats for Missouri was junior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) at 157 pounds.  Pairing with Brandon Becker of Indiana, Chandler suffered an 8-2 loss by decision to finish his tournament run at 2-2.  Becker was awarded one point for a technical violation and took down Chandler and put him on his back for a two point nearfall.  Chandler was unable to overcome Becker's lead and ended his season with a 25-6 record.

Missouri's Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) was eliminated from the tournament after losing a one point match, 3-2, to Wisconsin's Kyle Massey.  Ellis finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
