Cedar Falls, Iowa -The eighth-ranked Missouri wrestling team suffered back-to-back dual losses to fall from contention at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals held in Cedar Falls, Iowa. With the final dual against No. 9 Northwestern decided in the heavyweight bout, Missouri ended its run at the National Duals title, 22-19.
Down 9-0 entering the 141 pound match, Missouri redshirt freshman Vince Hannon (Plainfield, Ill.) shutout Keith Sulzer, 4-0, to put Missouri's first points on the board. Scoreless through the first period, Hannon put Sulzer on his back in the second and collected three points by nearfall. With two minutes of riding time, Hannon came through with the win.
Junior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) collected his fastest fall on the season, pinning Kyle Bertin in 42 seconds. Chandler helped bring the Tigers within six points of Northwestern making way for fourth-ranked sophomore Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) to take the mat at 165 pounds. Marable and Dominic Marella went scoreless through the first period, with Marella choosing down to start the second. After escaping in three seconds, Marabale recorded a takedown, but allowed Marella his escape to enter the third tied at two. With Marable down to start the final period, the Tiger grappler escaped in three seconds and held on for the 3-2 victory.
Wrestling at 184 pounds, junior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) was credited with Missouri's second bonus point win of the dual. Earning a 15-5 win by major decision over Adil Kolovic, Jordan cut his Wildcat opponent several times to accumulate enough points for the major. By the end of the bout, Jordan had tallied seven takedowns and was awarded one point for continual Wildcat stalling.
Missouri's final win on the night came from fifth-ranked sophomore Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) at 197 pounds. Wrestling Mike Tammilow, Askren was takedown 1:47 into the bout, but came up with a reversal to leave the first period tied at two. Choosing down to start the second, Askren escaped, earning a one point lead, which he added a takedown to in the third period for the eventual, 5-2 upset.
The Missouri wrestling team will return home to host No. 5 Oklahoma State, Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. (CT) in the Hearnes Center.
