Tigers Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Xavier (5-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) and Chicago State (0-1, 0-0 Mid-Continent), each by 6-1 scores, in a Saturday doubleheader at the Green Tennis Center. With the two wins, the Tigers extend their winning streak to five matches, and they have won each of those five contests at home.
"I think the team is doing great," Mizzou freshman Kaitlyn Ritchie said after the second match. "We have played really well at home, and we have two more matches next weekend, and then we have a couple more (weekends) against Big 12 schools at home, so hopefully we'll get confident here and once we get into the meat of our season, we'll just be able to continue to play well and win."
The Tigers are doing all they can to build that confidence, after earning two home wins in one day.
Mizzou started the morning with a convincing, 6-1, win over Xavier by taking the doubles point and winning five of six singles matches.
The Musketeers gave Mizzou a challenge in the doubles round, taking the No. 1 match, as Xavier's Kara Courtney and Jeanette Feider defeated Mizzou's No. 43 team, Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber, 8-4.
The other Tiger pairs would be there to turn things around, however, as Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala won at No. 2 while Ritchie and Jessica Giuggioli won at No. 3 to take the doubles point for Mizzou.
At No. 1 singles, Weber defeated Courtney, 6-4, 6-1. Weber dominated her service games, and was only broke once, while she was able to handle Courtney's serves well, breaking her four times en route to the straight-set victory.
Giuggioli stepped into the No. 2 spot against Xavier and blanked Aylin Seyaliogu, 6-0, 6-0, in the first match to finish. Svetlic won a close first set at No. 3 singles against Tifanie Treece, 6-4, and then took control of the second set, for a 6-4, 6-0, victory that clinched Mizzou's fourth consecutive home victory.
Tiger freshman Maureen Modesto won her match at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4, and Ritchie defeated Kelsey Kinnard, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6. Xavier's Jill Ducro defeated Ayala in straight sets at No. 5 singles.
The Tigers followed much of the same path in the second match of the day, defeating the Cougars by the same 6-1 score.
Weber took the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, to improve her record at No. 1 this season to 5-1. Giuggioli won her second match of the day at No. 2 singles, winning, 6-3, 6-3.
Svetlic won in straight sets at No. 4, while Ritchie and Ayala blanked their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
The Tigers swept the doubles point, winning all three matches. At No. 1, Svetlic and Weber won, 8-4. Dunham and Ayala took the No. 2 match, 8-3, and Ritchie and Giuggioli won at No. 3, 8-0.
The Tigers will take the week to prepare for another doubleheader next weekend. Mizzou will host Southeast Missouri at 9 am and Illinois-Chicago at 3 pm Saturday (Feb. 16).
