Tigers Finish Fourth at Midlands

Evanston, Ill. - The Missouri wrestling team closed out its second straight appearance at the Midlands Tournament in fourth place with 103 points behind Iowa (168.5), Iowa State (144.5) and Central Michigan (118). Seven Tiger grapplers finished among the top eight of their respective weight class, with three, seniors Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.), Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis,) and Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) managing top-four showings at 165, 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
Competing in his first tournament of the season, Askren wrapped up the two-day tournament held in Welsh-Ryan Arena in third place. Owning a 7-1 record on the season, Askren held off Phillip Keddy of Iowa, 7-1, in the bronze medal match. Askren's only loss of the tournament came to border opponent John Dergo of Illinois, 3-2, in the semi-finals, tying the record between the two opponents at 1-1.
Missouri's 165 pound starter, Marable, saw his 20-match win streak come to an end after dropping a 6-6 tiebreaker based on riding time to No. 1 seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin. Marable rebounded in the consolation bracket with an 8-4 decision over Lehigh's Mike Galante, but suffered a 4-2 loss to Iowa's Ryan Morning Star in sudden victory.
Two Missouri wrestlers finished among the top eight of the 165 pound weight class. Competing unattached, freshman Zach Toal (???) notched an eighth place showing and 4-3 record that included a string of four straight victories.
Sophomore Dorian Henderson dropped back-to-back losses decided by two points or less to fall to the consolation bracket. Henderson battled Iowa State's Duke Burke in overtime and came out on top, 3-1, good enough for a fifth place finish.
After strong day one showings by sophomore Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo,) and redshirt freshman Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.), the Tiger heavyweight and 197 pounder were forced to settle with an eighth and seventh place showing, respectively.
Ellis, the 2009 defending National Champion and winner of last year's Midlands Heavyweight Title, closed out the day in fourth place with a 5-2 record. Ellis powered through the wrestle-backs, holding off Tiger teammate Bradley, 5-2, in a tiebreaker. Ellis' final match of the day came against Lions Wrestling Club grapper Aaron Anspach. Ellis suffered a 5-3 loss finishing the day in fourth place.
The Missouri wrestling team is set to return to competition Jan. 10-11 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals held in Cedar Falls, Iowa on the Northern Iowa campus.
