UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Mizzou soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Syracuse Friday evening in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Tigers owned a 19-15 edge in shots, including a 3-1 edge in the double overtime period.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein notched the 16th shutout of her Tiger career, one shy of Tasha Dittamore's Mizzou record.

Missouri controlled the run of play early in the match, recording three shots within the opening 11 minutes. In the sixth minute, freshman Kaitlin Clark crossed a ball to the front of the box that found the foot of freshman Jasmine Johnson. Johnson one-timed the ball but her shot flew over the crossbar.

In the 19th minute, Clark got an opportunity of her own when she made a run into the box, but her attempt sailed to the right of the goal.

The teams' alternated chances as the first half wound down, with both squads' defenses holding firm.

Syracuse almost broke through off a corner kick in the 71st minute. A header off the cross flew near the goalmouth but sophomore Jasmine Johnson headed the shot away. The Orange threatened again in the final minute of regulation but the attempt sailed to the right of the goal.

In the 95th minute the Tigers earned a dangerous free kick. Senior Kaysie Clark sent a cross toward the far post while senior Taylor Grant made a run toward the ball. Grant nearly got her foot on the pass but the Syracuse keeper nabbed the ball at the last moment.

With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, Missouri earned a corner kick. Freshman Savannah Trujillo lofted a ball to the near post but sophomore Erin Webb's header sailed just wide of the post.

Sauerwein made three saves in goal for the Tigers.

Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 24 against West Virginia at 11 a.m. in University Park, Pa.
