ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - The Mizzou soccer team scored in the 87th minute but could not manage an equalizer as the team suffered a 2-1 loss to No. 17 South Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Southeastern Conference Soccer Tournament Wednesday night in Orange Beach, Ala.

The loss dropped the Tigers' record to 11-6-3 on the season, while the Gamecocks improved to 13-4-2.

Trailing 2-0 with four minutes remaining in regulation, senior Kaysie Clark lofted a ball eight yards in front of the net. Freshman Alli Magaletta headed the pass into the upper right corner of the net to cut Mizzou's deficit to 2-1. The tally was the third of the year for Magaletta, while Clark notched her team-leading 11st assist of the season.

The 11 assists for Clark rank fourth on Mizzou's single season record book, while her 22 career assists rank tied for fifth in program history.

Just one minute after her goal, Magaletta came within inches of knotting the match at 2-2. She received the ball, dribbled toward the box and unleashed a 25-yard blast that seemed destined for the back of the net. However, her shot sailed just wide of the left post.

Mizzou kept pressure on the South Carolina defense in the waning minutes but could not manage an equalizer.

The Gamecocks struck first with a tally in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The ball bounced around in the box before it was kicked out to the top of the box. South Carolina's Stevi Parker ran onto the ball and powered a low shot near the left post that eluded redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein by just inches.

Mizzou had one final chance at the end of the first half as the squad earned a corner in the final minute. Sophomore Melanie Donaldson sent a ball across the front of the goal but found the head of sophomore Erin Webb, but the shot flew high as time expired.

Just four minutes into the second half, the ball landed at the feet of freshman Kaitlyn Clark. The newcomer got the ball to her right foot and unleashed an 18-yard laser that bounced off the left post. The rebound bounced to the far post but was cleared before a Tiger could get to it.

South Carolina added another goal in the 57th minute on a breakaway chance. Sophie Groff received the ball at midfield, dribbled down the right flank, and sent a shot into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 Gamecock advantage.

Sauerwein made six saves in goal during the match.

The Tigers now await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m. CT.
