CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mizzou wrestling finished day one of the 2015 Defense Soap & Flips Southern Scuffle with 47.5 team points and seven Tigers still in the running for event titles. Overall, the Tigers stand in third place, trailing only Nebraska (48.0) and Penn State (52.0).
After preliminary matches came to a close, redshirt senior Alan Waters came out strong, winning by an 18-2 technical fall in his first match. Waters' second match and win of the day came against Conor Youtsey (Michigan) via a 4-2 decision.
As the No. 1 seed in the 141 pound bracket, redshirt sophomore Lavion Mayes advanced to Friday's field of eight tomorrow, winning his first match by a 20-5 technical fall. Mayes went on to defeat Mike Longo (Appalachian State) in the next round by a 9-6 decision.
Redshirt senior Drake Houdashelt looks to defend his Southern Scuffle crown from a year ago, as he went 3-0 on the day, earning bonus points in two of his matches (Fall at 2:49 and 15-0 technical fall). Houdashelt's toughest match of the day came against Taylor Simaz (Cornell), but even then, he allowed only one escape point, the only point scored against him all day.
