COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou wrestling pushed their record to 17-0 Sunday afternoon at the Hearnes Center after defeating Northern Illinois, 32-12. The victory also moved the Tigers to a perfect 5-0 in Mid-American Conference duals this season.
Tiger grapplers took home victories in eight of 10 matches against the Huskies, including achieving bonus points in four of those contests.
The visiting Huskies made a quick statement to open competition, as they picked up a pin at 125 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Zach Synon got Mizzou on the scoreboard next at 133 pounds with a 9-0 major decision shutout.
The Tigers tallied three consecutive wins to close out Sunday afternoon's first half of action. At 141 pounds, redshirt sophomore Lavion Mayes claimed a 6-1 decision, and redshirt junior Le'Roy Barnes earned a 6-0 decision shutout at 149 pounds.
Before the dual intermission, sophomore Joey Lavallee turned in an 8-2 decision victory to put Mizzou up 13-6 over Northern Illinois.
The second half of matches proved to be even better for Mizzou, as they won four-of-five contests with three of those victories earning bonus points. Redshirt senior Mikey England took home a 6-2 decision, and two matches later redshirt freshman Willie Miklus earned a quick pin over his Huskies opponent.
Sunday afternoon's final two matchups also resulted in impressive Tiger wins. Sophomore J'den Cox secured his seventh pin of the season, and redshirt senior Devin Mellon wrapped up his team's dual win with a 10-2 major decision.
The Tigers wrap up the month on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Northern Iowa. Action is set for a 7 p.m. (CT) start, and can be seen online for free at MizzouNetwork.com.
