The Tigers defeat Bradley, 6-1, and SIUE, 4-3
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis kicked off its 2016 spring match schedule in style, defeating Bradley and SIU Edwardsville, 6-1 and 4-3, respectively, Saturday at the Green Tennis Center. The Tigers were down two players due to injury for the majority of the day, but still pulled off the victories necessary to complete the doubleheader sweep.
In the first match of the day, Mizzou beat Bradley, 6-1, winning every match it actually played. The Tigers were forced to suffer defeats by default in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches due to injuries. Mizzou didn't let the foreseeable losses keep them down however, as they won both doubles matches to win the team point during the doubles portion of the match. The No. 56-ranked doubles team of senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) and Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) defeated Alejandra de Lasa and Ashley Thai, 6-3, while the Lashway sisters, junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) bested Malini Wijesinghe and Alexa Brandt, 6-4.
In the singles portion of the match, Mizzou swept the five matches they played in, with each Tiger winning in straight sets. No. 1 Santos, No. 2 Hine, and No. 3 Brianna Lashway made quick work of their opponents, yielding only four, three, and three points respectively in the two set victories. No. 4 Brittany Lashway defeated her opponent, Irinka Toidze, 6-2, 6-4, while No. 5 Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) beat Aimee Manfredo, 6-1, 6-4, capping Mizzou's 6-1 win.
The second match of the day featured SIU Edwardsville against the Tigers. The Cougars of SIUE won the doubles team point after Lexa Aranda and Sierra Halverson outlasted a furious comeback from the Lashway sisters. The Tiger duo trailed 5-2 in the doubles match, but roared back to tie the score at 5, only to fall 7-5 to the SIUE team. Hine and Santos captured their second doubles win on the day right before the Lashway match, defeating Mia Fronger and Madeline Hill, 6-2.
Mizzou won four matches in singles play, coming at the No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 positions. Hine, Mizzou's lone senior, got the nod at the No. 1 position in the nightcap, and did not disappoint. The New Braunfels, Texas native earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lexi Aranda to complete a perfect 4-0 day. Santos also finished 4-0 on the day after defeating Mia Fronger, 6-4, 6-1. Brianna Lashway lost the first set, 2-6, in her match against Madeline Hill, but overcame the deficit, winning the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3, in a marathon match which lasted near two hours. Brittany Lashway's final set was a different story, as the junior quickly defeated McKenzie Thomas, 6-2, 6-1.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, Jan. 30, when Mizzou hosts another doubleheader. Mizzou is slated to face Northern Iowa at 10 a.m. CT and UM-Kansas City at 5 p.m. Weather permitted, the match will take place at the Mizzou Tennis Complex or the Green Tennis Center.
