"Our women ran great today," said head coach Marc Burns. "Karissa looked amazing up front and really dropped the hammer over the last 1k."
After recording a personal-record in the Commodore Classic win on Sept. 17, Schweizer set a personal-record in the 5000m for the second straight meet, crossing the finish line at 16:09.83 and surpassing her previous record by 36 seconds. In all, nine Tigers set personal-records on the women's side as six Tigers finished in the top-32. Junior Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.) finished second for Mizzou and 13th overall with a time of 16:55.73, while senior Nicole Mello (Columbia, Mo.) bested her previous career high, finishing 15th at 17:05.18. Senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.) and redshirt junior Ellyn Atkinson (Springfield, Mo.) rounded out the top-five for Mizzou, finishing 17th and 26th, respectively.
"Jamie came up big in her first race of the year," Burns said. "Her presence in our top-five makes us better. Teylar had a nice breakthrough race and Nicole was strong despite feeling flat. I also thought Ellyn ran well. She closed the gap on our fourth runner and that is a big key to our success. It was nice to see Jordyn in the lineup in her first collegiate race."
On the men's side, redshirt senior Drew White (Crystal City, Mo.) finished ninth with a time of 23:57.99 to lead Mizzou to a third-place finish. White recorded his second top-10 finish of the season while setting a personal-record in the process, shaving over a full minute off his previous best time of 25:02. Finishing behind White was senior Ollie Lockley (Colby, Isle of Man), redshirt junior Marc Dubrick (DeKalb, Ill.) and senior Luca Russo (Kent, England), who finished 22nd, 24th and 27th, respectively. Redshirt freshman Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.) finished 44th overall at 25:23.59, 37 seconds faster than the time he posted at the Commodore Classic.
"It was nice to see Drew run up in the front pack," said Burns. "We needed a front runner to emerge and he gives us that. Luca and Sheldon really stepped up. They made us better in the four-five spot. The course was fast and the guys got after it. We were flying by people on the home stretch, which is something we emphasize big time. We weren't perfect today but there were of great things that happened. It shows us that we will continue to get better meet to meet."
