The men's and women's teams finished second and third, respectively.
Nashville, Tenn. — Mizzou Cross Country began the 2020 season Saturday morning at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tennessee. Racing in an All-SEC showdown, the Tigers had a strong showing against its conference opponents with six runners finishing in the Top-10 between the two teams.
The men finished in second place with 42 points and the women finished in third place with 63 points. Senior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) paced the Mizzou women with a second-place finish and a time of 21:07.2, while freshman William Sinclair (Tauwhere, New Zealand) led the men in his collegiate debut with a 24:37.8 time, good for third place.
Both teams improved upon the 2019 results at the same event in which the women finished fourth place and the men in fifth place.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Joining Sinclair in the Top-10 on the men's side were redshirt senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England), Marquette Wilhite (Warrensburg, Mo.) and Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria). This marks the first time since the Mizzou XC Opener (8/30/19) that the Mizzou men have placed four runners in the Top-10.
On the women's side, sophomore Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) followed Chapman's performance with a seventh-place finish. Freshman McKenna Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.) also put on an impressive result, finishing thirteenth in her first collegiate race.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns on the men: "Great start for both of our teams today. The men looked strong with four up front most of the race. Will really closed hard to separate and end up third. Kieran, Marquette and Martin are very fit right now and we should have a solid top four this fall. Jack came up big for us as our fifth today in his debut."
Burns on the women: "Our women ran well up front but we will need to figure out how to be better from 3-5 if we want to be a factor at SEC's. We have the ability to do it and it is just a matter of time for us to put it together on race day. Sarah has looked great in training and it showed today in her performance. Ginger has also made a big jump and will help us up front!
Overall we are thankful to be on the road competing. These experiences are a big part of the development of our team!"
