Mizzou Tennis Sweeps Illinois State in Sunday Doubleheader

Mizzou beats Omaha, 4-0 and 4-1 in doubleheader to improve to 10-2
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis (10-2, 0-0 SEC) took both ends of a doubleheader against Illinois State on Sunday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Tigers were victorious in the first match by a score of 4-0 and they won the second by a score of 4-1.
MATCH 1
In the first match, the Tigers started off by taking the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After senior Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) took court one (6-2) and Illinois State's Vujicic and Zduniak took court three (6-2), all eyes were drawn to the decisive court two. The Tigers' senior Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and freshman Valentina Vazquez Pongruber (Santiago, Chile) were ultimately victorious (7-5), giving Mizzou the doubles point.
In singles play, the Tigers were efficient, taking three courts in straight sets. On court two, Oliveira delivered a quick victory to give Mizzou a 2-0 lead (6-2, 6-2). Shortly thereafter, Vazquez defeated her court three opponent in straight sets to put Mizzou on the brink of clinching the first match. After falling behind in the second set, sophomore Elys Ventura (Aukland, New Zealand) fought back to end the match with her decisive court four victory.
MATCH 2
Mizzou got off to a slow start in the second match of the day; dropping the doubles point and giving the Redbirds an early 1-0 lead.
However, the Tigers would respond quickly, taking each court that was able to start. Vazquez was able to gain control of her match very quickly, taking the first set 6-0 and jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second set. After dropping four-straight points, she was able to regain control and finish off her opponent to even the score at one.
Almost simultaneously, Mizzou rattled off three wins in a row with Ventura, Wright and Oliveira winning their matches within just seconds of each other to take the match for the Tigers.

Mizzou will next host Memphis on Friday, Feb. 12 at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
