COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri soccer scored first, but was defeated by Texas 3-1 Thursday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Junior Keegan Good gave the Tigers an opening-goal lead, but the Longhorns responded with a trio of second-half scores.
Each side settled into the contest in the opening minutes with neither squad gaining much of an offensive advantage.
Seven minutes in, freshman Emily Derucki split the Texas backline and attempted a quick strike that snuck just over the crossbar.
In the 10th minute, Good found the net as the Longhorn's defense attempted to clear a cross by sophomore forward Brianna Buels. The ball was pushed to the top of the box where the junior charged and fired it into the bottom right corner passed the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper.
For the Tigers, the goal marked the fifth score in the opening 10 minutes in the last six games.
Texas pressed to get a response in the heart of the half, but the Mizzou backline held their positions and stifled a couple of chances.
In the 28th minute, the Texas attack raced up the right side of the box and received a clear look on goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Kate Phillips deflected the attempt with a diving stop.
With the stop, the Tigers took a one-goal advantage into the break.
Texas returned to the pitch with a spark and tied the contest in the 47th minute.
The Longhorns tried to take the lead just six minutes later as their attack struck a shot from outside the box that went passed the outstretched arms of Phillips but sailed wide.
Despite the miss, Texas earned the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute.
The Tigers pressed to find an equalizer as the game neared a close, but the Longhorns added a final goal in the 85th minute to put the contest out of reach.
Texas led Missouri in shots 17 to 11. The Longhorns placed six attempts on goal while the Tigers placed five.
With the loss, Missouri dropped to 10th in the SEC standings. The top 12 programs make the conference tournament in November.
