
No. 25 Volleyball Falls to Mississippi State Sunday

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Four Tigers finished in double-figures offensively as the No. 25 ranked University of Missouri volleyball team (19-7, 10-4 SEC) dropped a four-set (25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 24-26) decision at Mississippi State (11-13, 5-10 SEC) Sunday afternoon at the Newell-Grissom Building.
Mychael Vernon paced the Mizzou offense with 15 kills to go with 14 digs and a trio of blocks.
Jordan Iliff chipped in a 14-kill, 12-dig double-double along with two aces and two solo blocks.
Colleen Finney added 12 kills on a .360 clip, just one kill shy of matching her career high. She also had two blocks and two digs.
Regan Haith rounded out the double-digit attackers, notching 10 kills (.526) with five blocks.
Marina Crownover dished out 46 assists with 13 digs while Sierra Dudley finished with 10 assists, six digs and two blocks.
Libero Maya Sands was one of five Tigers in double-digits for digs, compiling 21 and two assists. She has now surpassed 1,000 digs at Mizzou (1,421 in her career).
Kiaraliz Perez Catala grabbed a season-best 19 digs with a trio of assists.
Claire Morrissey tallied a career-best six kills on a .667 hitting percentage over two sets Sunday. She also had a block and a dig.
FIRST SET (25-19 Mizzou, Mizzou leads 1-0)
Missouri jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before extending the margin to 10-5.
A 3-0 Tiger run that featured kills from Iliff and Janet deMarrais extended the lead to 15-9 at the media stoppage.
Finney added a termination before a Mississippi State miscue made the score 18-11 and brought on a Bulldogs timeout.
MSU and Missouri then exchanged 3-0 rallies to make it 22-15.
Iliff and deMarrais each added kills for set point (24-18).
The Bulldogs would score once more before a Finney rally stopper secured the opening set (25-19).
Mizzou hit .273 out of the gates Sunday. Iliff had seven kills over the first set on a .385 clip while Vernon had four kills. Crownover notched 16 assists.
SECOND SET (25-20 MSU, Tied 1-1)
MSU then commenced the second with a 6-3 edge that grew to 10-4.
The Bulldogs then went into the media timeout up 15-6.
A 4-1 MSU run made the score 19-8 and prompted a Mizzou timeout.
Iliff then placed an ace during a 4-0 MU run to cut the deficit to 20-13.
Mizzou then utilized a 7-2 run to pull within four (24-20). Vernon had a trio of kills during the sequence while Finney added two.
Missouri fended off set point twice before MSU evened the match at 1-1 (25-20).
THIRD SET (25-22 MSU, MSU leads 2-1)
The third and fourth sets Sunday featured eight and nine tie scores, respectively.
MSU once again started hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and then 9-2 as Mizzou called a timeout.
Trailing 12-5, Missouri scored seven unanswered to knot the frame. Iliff had four kills in the run including three-straight.
Finney notched consecutive terminations for an 18-17 lead. Vernon added a kill to make it 19-18 before a 4-0 run from MSU (22-19).
Haith notched a pair of kills before an MSU miscue to bring Mizzou within one (23-22).
MSU then secured the set with a kill and MU error (25-22).
Haith had five kills on a .714 clip over set #3.
FOURTH SET (26-24 MSU, MSU wins 3-1)
MU took an early 7-6 lead following a block assist by Morrissey and Finney.
Mississippi State then rattled off seven-straight points to pull ahead 13-7.
A 6-2 Tigers run would bring Mizzou within two (15-13). Haith had three consecutive kills before a Morrissey rally stopper.
Missouri then evened the frame with four straight (21-21) including a block and a kill from Naomi Franco.
Vernon added a pair of kills while Haith notched a rally stopper to keep things all square (21-21, 22-22, 24-24).
MSU then captured the match with the next two points (26-24).
Morrissey and Vernon each had six kills over the final set Sunday, hitting .667 and .312, respectively. Haith added four kills and Crownover compiled 13 assists.
MU hit a match-best .298 over the fourth frame after .277 in the third.
