COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri soccer battled throughout, but was defeated 2-0 by No. 10 Memphis Sunday night at Walton Stadium.
Despite several offensive chances for Mizzou (1-1), a Memphis (2-0) goal just after the halftime break proved to be the separator in the contest.
Missouri was on the front foot early in the contest as forwards Kylee Simmons and Bella Carillo gained several possessions charging near Memphis' goal.
In the seventh minute, senior Milena Fischer sent a free kick into the box that found the head of Simmons, but a bouncing shot attempt was narrowly deflected by the Memphis keeper to keep the contest scoreless.
Both teams battled as the first half closed, but the possession largely remained in the midfield with neither side achieving a great scoring look before the break.
In the 53rd minute, Memphis scored the game's first goal as Momo Nakao dribbled at the top of the box and dished it to Ai Kitagawa who elevated the ball into the top left corner of the net.
Nine minutes later, Memphis sent a cross into the left side of the box that found the right foot of an attacking player, but Mizzou goalkeeper Bella Hollenbach went down to the ground to corral the quick strike and keep the visitors' advantage at one.
Missouri narrowly missed a chance to even the score in the 75th minute as Fischer sent a freekick into the front left corner of the box. The ball found the head of Mia Yang and just cleared the crossbar.
The chance proved to be the last of the contest for the Mizzou as Memphis put together a heavy defensive set until the final whistle.
A Memphis build-up in the closing seconds resulted in another goal for the visitors to result in the final tally.
Both teams combined for 14 shots, five of which were on goal. Simmons led Missouri with three shots of her own, while Hollenbach collected a pair of saves.
