TULSA, Okla. - No. 17-ranked Mizzou wrestling finished day one of the National Duals Invitational sponsored by Paycom with a record of 2-1. Across 30 individual matches, the Tigers compiled a record of 16-14, with six bonus point wins. Mizzou tallied a combined 63 dual points, while allowing 40.
Mizzou opened up the tournament against the No. 1-seed Iowa. The Hawkeyes brought home the victory in the opener, but the Tigers bounced back with a dominant win over No. 22 Little Rock to stay alive. In its third and final dual of the day, Missouri wrestled Michigan, with the winner clinching a top-eight finish and a spot in the second day of the tournament. The Tigers took care of business, steamrolling their way to a 26-10 win over the Wolverines. Mizzou's day one success qualified the Tigers for the second day of the tournament, where they will face the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
MATCH ONE NOTES
- Mizzou falls to 2-5 all-time against the Hawkeyes. The series dates back to the 1967-68 season, in which Mizzou lost a 21-8 dual in Iowa City. Their most recent meeting prior to today took place in 2014-15, when Mizzou claimed an 18-12 victory at the NWCA National Duals.
- The Tigers' record against Iowa during the Brian Smith era stands at 2-3, with all duals taking place at an iteration of the National Duals.
- Missouri has not been held scoreless in a dual since February 13, 1999, against Oklahoma State. Stoner's win at 285 extended Mizzou's streak of scoring in a dual to 457 straight.
- Mizzou wrestlers only surrendered four takedowns across the dual, with five matches ending with no takedowns.
MATCH TWO NOTES
- The win improves Missouri's record against Little Rock to 1-1. Their only prior meeting came at last season's Collegiate Duals in Nashville, where the Trojans won 24-19.
- Moore's technical fall over Tucker marked the fourth of his career, and the 25th total bonus point win.
- Three Mizzou wrestlers notched ranked wins in the dual, highlighted by Edmond's win over No. 16 Brock Herman. Mendoza and Sinclair picked up ranked wins as well, at 157 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively.
- At 157 pounds, true freshman Mendoza earned his first career victory in a Mizzou singlet, knocking off No. 31 Jaivon Jones.
MATCH THREE NOTES
- Mizzou's win bumps their record against Michigan to 2-3, with both wins coming in the two most recent duals. The teams last met in 2011-12 with Missouri winning 21-12.
- With the win over Michigan, Missouri is guaranteed at least $50,000 in prize money for the weekend.
- Mauger's two falls at 125 pounds marked the fourth and fifth of his career and his second and third of the young season.
- Mendoza's win at 157 pounds marked the second of his career, with both victories coming over ranked opponents.
- The 174-pound bout was a rematch of a Blood Round match at 165 pounds at last season's national tournament. Steed won that match 4-1 in sudden victory over Beau Mantanona to earn his first All-American honor. Steed is now 2-0 in his collegiate career against Mantanona.
- Sinclair's technical fall at 184 pounds was the third of his career and the first to come over a ranked opponent.
