COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former University of Missouri women's basketball guard Sophie Cunningham began her seventh WNBA season and made her debut with the Indiana Fever on Thursday night.
Cunningham recorded nine points, six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes against the Atlanta Dream while returning from an ankle injury.
"She brings a level of energy that is huge and I think not playing in a couple games, not getting a chance to practice fully before getting back out there, I was just really proud of her for the energy she brought," Cunningham's teammate Lexie Hull said following the game. "She made some big plays down the stretch, getting steals and getting deflections. We needed her tonight. Just really proud of her coming out and being able to compete like that."
Cunningham has now appeared in 183 career games and made 92 starts in the league, averaging 7.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
She joined the Fever this offseason after spending her first six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury.
A Rock Bridge High School graduate, Cunningham was a 2019 All-American and three-time All-American honorable mention. She became the most decorated athlete in program history during her career from 2015-19. In 129 games with the Tigers, she averaged 17.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists, while leading Missouri to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Earning All-SEC recognition each of her four years by both the league office and the Associated Press, Cunningham finished her historic career as Mizzou's all-time leading scorer (2,187 points), all-time leader in free throws made (537), second in three-pointers made (238), second in three-point percentage (.403), second in free throw percentage (.839), third in points per game (17.0), fourth in assists (390), fourth in field goals made (706) and eighth in field goal percentage (.501).
A 2015 McDonald's All-American, Cunningham led Rock Bridge to four Class 5 state titles and was named the 2014 USA Today Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Cunningham was recently announced as a member of Missouri's Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2025.
