Tarique George and Brooke Sawatzky earned conference recognitions for giving back to the Columbia community during the 2024-25 school year.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Two members of the University of Missouri track and field program – senior thrower Tarique George and freshman heptathlete Brooke Sawatzky – were named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced Thursday.
George, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, volunteered 53 hours of his time with Columbia-area food banks, making a meaningful impact in the local community. In addition to his off-the-field efforts, he supported the Mizzou athletics department as an event staff member at several home events throughout the year.
A dedicated teammate and leader, George was a key contributor to Mizzou's nationally ranked discus squad, which ended the season as the No. 6 unit in the country. Individually, he ranks 10th in the SEC and 40th nationally in the event. He concluded his collegiate career with a personal-best throw of 57.97m (190-2) at the first round of the NCAA Championships on May 31.
Sawatzky of Naperville, Illinois, logged 63 community service hours while balancing a demanding academic and athletic schedule in her first year of collegiate competition. Sawatzky split her time among several local organizations, including the Bluff Retirement Home, Special Olympics, and the local children's hospital.
She posted career highs in the high jump (1.50m/4-11) and 100m hurdles (15.03) at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in her final meet of the season.
Mizzou next concludes its 2025 season at the NCAA Championship Finals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, June 11-14. Valentina Barrios (women's javelin), Alicia Burnett (women's 100m), Skylar Coffey (men's discus), Claudina Diaz (women's high jump), Kristi Perez-Snyman (women's high jump) and Callan Saldutto (men's javelin) will represent the Tigers while competing for a national title in their respective events.
