TULSA, Okla. - No. 14 Mizzou wrestling concludes day one of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship in fourth place with 70.5 points at the BOK Center on Friday, March 6.
The Tigers pushed through seven wrestlers to day two of the event, highlighted by finalists Cam Steed and Aeoden Sinclair. Missouri wrestlers combined to go 18-13 over the course of the day, good for a .581 winning percentage. Six of Missouri's 18 wins came with bonus points.
SESSION I
Seven Tigers secured wins in the opening round, highlighted by three major decision wins (Mack Mauger, Teague Travis and Max Mayfield) and two technical falls (Cam Steed and Aeoden Sinclair). A first-round bye at 285 pounds made it eight representatives in the quarterfinal round. The quarterfinals opened up with an upset at 133 pounds, where Gage Walker earned himself an automatic qualification to the national tournament with a win over returning Big 12 Champion Dominick Serrano (UNCO) in sudden victory. Steed picked up a victory in his quarterfinal match, and Sinclair tallied his second technical fall of the day to make it three into the semifinal round.
At the conclusion of the opening session, the Black and Gold sat in fifth place as a team with 35.5 points. Missouri wrestlers combined for a record of 10-8 in the first session, with nine out of 10 wrestlers surviving to make it to Session II.
SESSION II
The Tigers' first semifinalist was Walker at 133 pounds, where he faced Arizona State's Kyler Larkin in a rematch from a dual in mid-January. Tonight's semifinal concluded with the same result, a win for the Sun Devil. At 174 pounds, Steed made his second appearance in the Big 12 semifinals in as many attempts, taking on Oklahoma's Carter Schubert for the second time this season. Steed secured an early takedown and held on for a tight 4-3 win to punch his ticket to the final. Sinclair then quickly joined the party, controlling his way to a decision victory at 184 pounds, making it two Tigers in the finals.
Six competitors toed the line in the consolations during Session II. Four out of six picked up wins in their first consolation bouts to secure a spot on the podium. Senior Josh Edmond jumped out to a five-point lead before a tornado warning came to town, pausing the tournament. Despite a nearly hour-long delay, Edmond remained undeterred, coasting to a victory. Travis and 285-pounder Jarrett Stoner punched their tickets all the way to the consolation semifinals with two wins on the backside, while Mauger and Edmond both went 1-1 on the evening to end up in tomorrow's seventh-place bout. Stoner closed out the evening on a high note with a third-period takedown to secure his place at the national tournament.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
- Mizzou advanced eight to the quarterfinals, tied for the third most of any team at the tournament with South Dakota State. The only teams with more quarterfinalists were Oklahoma State and Iowa State, with 10 and nine, respectively.
- Missouri's tally of eight advancing out of the first round improves upon last season, in which only seven Tigers made it to the quarterfinals.
- The total of three semifinalists matches last season's mark, making Missouri one of seven teams to have three or more competitors advance to the semifinal round.
- Walker's upset of No. 11 Serrano in the 133-pound quarterfinal marked his highest-ranked win of the season. Serrano won the 133-pound Big 12 title last season and is a two-time national qualifier.
- Walker and Sinclair each earned their first bids to the national tournament by securing wins in the quarterfinals at 133 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively.
- Stoner will also be headed to his first national tournament at 285 pounds after advancing to the consolation semifinals to clinch a bid.
- Steed's conference tournament has been a path of rematches, with the quarterfinal coming against Moses Espinoza-Owens and his semifinal pitting him against Carter Schubert. Steed dropped decisions to both opponents at the Tiger Style Invite early in the season, before the returning All-American avenged both early losses today.
- Steed and Sinclair's back-to-back semifinal victories ensured that Tiger Style would have multiple finalists. Mizzou has now had multiple Big 12 Conference finalists for five consecutive years, dating back to when it rejoined the conference.
- Seven Tigers secured a spot in the top eight. This marks an improvement from last season, in which only five representatives ended the conference tournament on the podium.
- Four individual Tigers earned automatic qualifications for the NCAA Championships in Cleveland on day one of the Big 12 Championships (Walker, Steed, Sinclair and Stoner). One more athlete is still alive to earn an automatic bid tomorrow with one win (Travis).
UP NEXT
Missouri will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, for day two of the Big 12 Championship at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The second day will see the completion of medal matches in Session III and the crowning of individual conference champions in Session IV.
