Missouri Swimmers Split in Season Opener

The Tigers were in charge from start to finish as they claimed both relays and all but two events in between. Mizzou also claimed the top-three spots in ten of the 13 events. Head coach Brian Hoffer was pleased with the way his team competed against the Cyclones.
"We wanted to do well for ourselves," Hoffer said. "I am proud of the women because they kept up the intensity from start to finish."
Even captain Tawney Larm was impressed with the team and its attitude. "We expected to win, but not by so much. Everyone got up and raced which was great to see. We go to swim some off events and not everyone had to swim a full load which will help for next weekend," Larm said.
Leading the charge for the women were freshmen Katy Chandler and Leslie Hoh. Chandler claimed both the 200 and 500 freestyle events while Hoh was a double-winner with victories in the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke.
Katy had a great race in the 500," Hoffer said. "She took control of the race from the start and finished very strong. That was a big surprise for this early in the season."
The seniors were not to be forgotten either as Rikki Janes won the 200 backstroke and got the meet started with an outstanding lead-off leg on the 400 medley relay. Larm turned in two third place finishes in the 500 freestyle and the 1000 freestyle, two events she rarely swims nor does she train for them.
The Tigers next head to Champaign, Ill. to compete in the Illinois Dual Extravaganza where they will be competing against tough competition. MU first does battle with the Fighting Illini on Friday night (Nov. 5) before competing against Penn State Saturday morning. On Saturday night, the Tigers will do battle with the Jayhawks from Kansas as they will be looking to seek a win after falling to KU last season. To finish out the weekend, Mizzou will dual Bowling Green and Southern Illinois on Sunday. All the 1998 version of the dual extravaganza MU had a clean sweep in the meet winning all five of their meets.
