COLUMBIA, Mo.- Day one was a good one for the University of Missouri swimming and diving teams at the Indiana Invite in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday night. The MU women wracked up 391.5 points and lead second place Indiana (316) as well as 18th-ranked Tennessee (217.5) after seven events. The Tiger men currently stand in second place with 341 points behind the host Indiana Hoosiers (457 points). The three-day event continues tomorrow morning with preliminary races in the morning and the finals taking place in the evening.
The women scored two first place finishes along with a couple of rewarding individual performances. Freshman Katy Chandler won the 400 freestyle in a time of 4 minutes, 19.37 seconds. Fellow frosh Leslie Hoh led a dominant performance by the Tigers in the 200 I.M. Hoh's time of 2 minutes, 18.74 seconds was just .34 seconds off of an NCAA qualifying time. The Tigers scored 85.5 points in the 200 I.M. as Mizzou took home first, second, third, sixth and seventh places in the finals. Senior Rikki Janes finished in third place with a time of 2 minutes, 21.27 seconds. That time gives Janes, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewon, a provisional cut with a chance for the Canadian Olympic Trials.
Fellow Canadian Tara Brooks also earned a Canadian Olympic Trial time in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.09 seconds. Junior Jeanna Willi was Mizzou's top finisher in the 50 free with a time of 26.24 seconds, just .04 seconds from the U.S. Olympic Trial cut.
The Tigers did not break any school records on the day. The meet is being run as a short-course meters event instead of yards which are usually used.
The Missouri men also enjoyed several very good swims. Junior Mike Cervenka was the winner in the men's 400 freestyle in a time of 3 minutes, 58.80 seconds. Freshman Matt Ferrarelli would have broken a school record in yards in the 200 I.M. He finished in third place with a time of 2 minutes, 3.80 seconds. Fellow frosh Radu Miclaus won the consolation race in the 200 I.M.
The Tigers also got a win in the 50 freestyle by junior Aaron Lo. Lo, also a native of Canada, qualified for the Canadian Olympic Trials with a time of 22.91 seconds.
