COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri Tigers women's swimming and diving team took a big step for the program this weekend at the Indiana Invite in Bloomington, Ind. The MU women repeated as the Invite champions by defeating 27th ranked Indiana and 18th ranked Tennessee. The Tigers wracked up 1,158 points to the Hoosiers' 912.5 and the Volunteers' 770.
The Missouri men's team finished with a very respectable 1,056 points, but could not overtake 25th ranked Indiana for the title. The Hoosiers scored 1,190 points. The Tigers did outscore Southern Illinois who finished with 769.
The women's team did not have any first place finishers on the final day, but they did put a lot of points on the board. Senior Rikki Janes, who enjoyed an outstanding weekend, placed third in the 200 backstroke. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewon native finished with a time of 2 minutes, 18.55 seconds giving her a provisional cut for the Canadian Olympic Trials. Freshmen Sarah Stowe and Chrissy Frieh placed fifth and sixth in that event for the Tigers.
Missouri also placed three swimmers in the 100 freestyle. Ellen Cross finished third for Mizzou followed by senior Whitney Nigh and junior Kim Lambert in fourth and fifth places respectively.
Freshman Leslie Hoh fell short in her quest for three first place finishes on the weekend. Hoh placed second in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2 minutes, 36.75 seconds. She was followed in third place by senior Tawney Larm. Freshman Tiffany Bohon finished seventh in that event.
The Tigers also received fourth and fifth place finishes from Krista Davis and Molly Vetter in the 200 butterfly. Vetter also placed third in the 1650 freestyle with Sarah Stowe finishing the race in second place in a time of 17 minutes, 16.13 seconds.
Head Coach Brian Hoffer could not be more pleased with his women's team effort over the weekend.
"This was an unbelievable team performance this weekend," said Hoffer. "This weekend was definitely a forward movement for our program."
The Missouri men just did not have the depth to catch the host Hoosier team, but they still recorded some outstanding performances. Freshman Radu Miclaus, who enjoyed an outstanding weekend, finished second in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1 minute, 52.27 seconds.
Also adding on to his success over the weekend was junior Aaron Lo. The Whitby, Ontario native collected his third Canadian Olympic Trials cut with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle. His time was 51.28 seconds. Fellow junior Brendan Smith finished fourth in that event.
Sophomore Andy Cole and freshman Matt Ferrarelli placed third and fourth in the 200 backstroke for the Tigers. Missouri also had good representation in the 1650 freestyle with Dane Pederson placing third and Randy Swift finishing fourth.
The Tigers will not compete again until January 15 when they take on Southwest Missouri State in a dual meet in Springfield, Mo. The men and women will swim in their home openers vs. Missouri-Rolla and Iowa on Jan. 22 and 28 respectively.
