COLUMBIA, Mo.- It is one thing to have to challenge a nationally ranked team. It is another thing to have to challenge a nationally ranked team while fighting the flu bug.
That is the situation the Missouri Tigers faced on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. The 8th ranked Nebraska women defeated a depleated Tiger team (7-3) by a score of 189-106. The Missouri men (6-3) fell to the 15th ranked Huskers by a score of 171-120. The Tigers will face Division II power Drury College next weekend in Springfield, Mo. It will be their final tune-up for the Big 12 Championships.
The women swam without freshman phenom Katie Mae Fields while several other Tigers, including standout Tawney Larm, were less than 100 percent physically due to the flu. Nebraska won every event on the afternoon. Sophomore Shandra Johnson was a double-winner for Nebraska in the 100 backstroke as well as the 500 freestyle. Senior Teresa Alshammer won back-to-back races for the Huskers in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The Tigers received a solid performance out of junior Cristina Souza who placed second in the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Freshman Krista Davis finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.99 seconds.
The Mizzou men had a very good meet, but the Huskers were obviously better. Sophomore Aaron Lo continued his brilliant season by winning the 100 breaststroke over defending Big 12 champion Val Kalmikovs with a time of 57.51 seconds. Lo was edged out by Anthony Rogis in the 50 free 21:22 seconds to 21.27 seconds. Chris Peters placed second in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1 minute, 52.93 seconds. Mike Tucker also had a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes 5.04 seconds. He was defeated by the Huskers' Kalmikovs.
