In their third conference meet of the season, the University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving squads played host to nationally ranked University of Nebraska at the MU Natatorium this afternoon (Sat., Jan. 29). While the men's basketball team defeated Texas A&M at the Hearnes Center, the Tiger swimmers and divers made history in the pool.
Momentum was on MU's side coming off its emotional win over Iowa last night. The MU women's team recorded its biggest win in school history handing the No. 16 Huskers a 123-120 loss. The win marked only the second conference opponent Mizzou has defeated since the inception of the Big 12 Conference (Iowa State the other). Mizzou's men were not as fortunate as they fell to No. 17 NU 142-99.
Missouri's women picked up right where they left off last night against Iowa as Rikki Janes, freshman Leslie Hoh, junior Jeanna Willi and freshman Ellen Cross teamed up again to claim the 200 medley relay title in a time of 1:46.65.
The 50 free was the highlight for the Black and Gold women. Juniors Jeanna Willi (23.79) and Kim Lambert (24.54) claimed the fist two placed followed by senior Whitney Nigh (25.06) who finished fourth. Missouri wracked up 15 points to the Cornhuskers four.
With two events remaining, MU knew they had a shot if they placed first, third and fourth in the 100 breast and first and third in the 200 free relay. Things did not go quite to form as the meet came down to the final relay. Freshman Leslie Hoh (1:05.68) won the 100 breast as senior Tawney Larm (1:06.34) finished third while freshman Tiffany Bohon (1:07.06) placed fifth. MU scored 13 points while NU only recorded six.
Heading into the final relay, Mizzou had to finish 1-2 if they wanted to win and that is exactly what the Tigers did. Lambert, Cross, Nigh and sophomore Tara Brooks (1:36.12) placed first while freshman Chrissy Frieh, junior Kara Bramer, sophomore Molly Vetter and Janes (1:37.93) coasted into second place.
MU's men held their own against Nebraska, but the Huskers were just too much for Missouri to handle today. In the end, the Black and Gold men claimed two events while finishing runner- up in four events.
Aaron Lo was one of Mizzou's two winners on the day as he was victorious in the 50 free for the third consecutive weekend. His time of 20.79 was just shy of his performance last week against Rolla. Freshman Radu Miclaus was the other Tiger to win an event. Miclaus won the 100 fly in a season best time of 49.84. It marked the third victory in the event for the freshman.
Up next for the Tigers is the University of Evansville. Both squads will be competing next Saturday, Feb. 5 in the MU Natatorium at 1:00. It will be Mizzou's last home meet of the season and their last dual meet prior to the Big 12 Championships. The women's conference meet takes place Feb. 17-19 while the men compete at the conference championships March 2-4. Both meets will be held in College Station, Texas.
