It was a day filled with a lot emotion at the MU Natatorium as the University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams both downed the University of Evansville. On senior day, the Tiger men defeated the Purple Aces 177-90 while the women won with a score of 191-84.
After an emotional thank you to the ten seniors swimming in the final home meet of their careers, the dual got underway with Mizzou claiming 24 of the 30 events. There were a total of 14, 1-2 finishes and 6, 1-2-3 sweeps on the day.
Junior Aaron Lo started the day off breaking the block in lane 1 during the warm-up events and continued to show his muscle as he won both the 50 free (21.01) and 100 breast (58.19). Sophomore Shane Whildin was also a double winner claiming both the 50 fly (23.19) and 100 fly (51.21).
However the star of the day for the men was Matt Ferreralli. The freshman, who even had his own cheering section, won the 500 free (4:42.30), 100 back (52.36) and 200 IM (1:54.00). Ferrarelli's time in the 200 IM set a new pool record, the only one set on the day.
The other winners for the men were juniors Charlie Davies and Mike Cervenka. Davies won the 50 breast (27.24) while Cervenka claimed the 200 free (1:43.77).
For the women, it was a complete team effort as five of the eight seniors won events. Rikki Janes won both the 100 fly (59.43) and the 100 back (59.80) captain Tawney Larm won the 100 breast (1:06.43). Both women also swan on both of Mizzou's winning relays.
MU's other seniors to claim titles were Erika Kalocinksi in the 50 back (27.78), Kristin Ziemke in the 50 breast (31.58) and Whitney Nigh in the 100 free (59.43).
The other Black and Gold swimmers to win events for the women were junior s Kim Lambert in the 50 free (24.45), Jeanna Willi in the 50 fly (25.72), sophomore Molly Vetter in the 200 free (1:54.40) and freshmen Leslie Hoh in the 200 IM (2:10.46) and Sarah Stowe in the 500 free (5:06.56).
Mizzou also dominated the boards this afternoon. Freshman James Sweeney made a clean sweep of the diving events for the men winning both one-meter (274.05) and three-meter (247.95) while Junior Kristy Wanner was victorious on both boards for the women winning the one-meter (168.25) and three-meter (276.3). It marked the first time all season Missouri has won all four diving events.
Now that the dual meet season is over, both teams can claim their best records under head coach Brian Hoffer. The men finished the season 6-2 while the women were 9-2. Both teams also recorded big upsets within the conference on the year as the men defeated Kansas 247-218 in November at the Illinois Dual Extravangza and the women surprised Nebraska 123-120 last weekend in Columbia.
Up next for the Black and Gold is the championship portion of the season. The women have one weekend off before they take to the waters at the Big 12 Championships, Feb. 17-19. The men are off until their conference meet as well, March 2-4. Both championships meets will be held in College Station, Texas on the Texas A&M campus.
