LINCOLN, Neb. -- -
Texas A&M's depth got the best of the Missouri men's swimming and diving team in dual meet competition on Saturday in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Tigers scored and competed with one of the best teams in the nation, but the Aggies had more competitors to score points and that led to a 172-128 victory for the Aggies. The score however did not dictate the meet as the Tigers scored high in many individual events, winning 8 out of the possible 16 events.
Senior 2002 NCAA qualifier Radu Miclaus made his claim for the best butterflier in the conference this season with victories in both the 100 (50.53) and 200 butterfly (1:51.38). Miclaus also added a second place as a member of the 200 medley relay (1:34.20) team with freshman Chris Lukas and sophomores Matt North and Justin Zeimetz.
Lukas won his first collegiate individual event in the 100 backstroke, winning with a time of 52.08. He added a third place finish in the 200 back, gaining valuable points with Matt Ferrarelli (First the 200 back) and Miclaus (Fourth in the 200 back). Ferrarelli showed that he is recovered from his injury that kept him out of the 2002 Big 12 Championships with his victory in the 200 back (1:52.07) and another victory in the 400 individual medley (4:04.60).
The sophomore duo of Matt North and Justin Zeimetz each added victories in the 200 breast (2:08.25) and 50 freestyle (21.22) respectively. Junior Tyler Belanger finished behind Zeimetz in the 50 free to earn second.
The men's diving team showed that despite being young (3 freshman and 1 senior) they are far from inexperienced. Zac Metcalf won the 3-meter board with a score of 287.75 just ahead of senior Jamie Sweeney (281.65). Evan Watters finished fourth (254.37). In the 1-meter board, Sweeney was the top Tiger finisher with a second place (267.40), with Metcalf and Watters finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
The men's team returns to action at the Illinois Invite in Champaign, Illinois on October 26. The Tigers will face tough opponents in Michigan State and Southern Illinois.
