
Three Tigers Qualify for NCAA Outdoor Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - University of Missouri track team had an impressive day at the first day of the 2003 NCAA Central Region Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Three Tiger athletes automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California later this month.
Tiger senior co-captain Russ Bell finished fifth in both the hammer throw and the discus to qualify. Bell threw 202 feet, 1 inch in the hammer throw, his second-farthest throw of the season, and 180-3 in the discus. To qualify for the NCAA Championships an athlete must finish in the top five of their event.
Two Tiger juniors also qualified for the championships today in pole vaulter Jennifer Bennett and thrower Janae Strickland. Bennett set a personal best and broke the school-record in the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 6.25 inches to finish second in the event. Janae Strickland threw 52 feet, 1.75 inches in the women's shot put and she also finished second in her event.
The NCAA Mideast Regional Championships conclude tomorrow and the athletes who qualify will move onto the NCAA Championships June 11th-14th.
