
In Close Dual, Missouri Defeats Hofstra 19-13

Cleveland, Ohio-Extending its streak to 9-0, Missouri defeated No. 11 Hofstra 19-13 in its second dual of the day. The Tigers will meet with seventh-ranked Penn State at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on mat two of the Cleveland State Convocation Center.
The Pride of Hofstra jumped to an early lead with wins at 125- and 133-pounds. Second-ranked Tom Noto of Hofstra held sophomore Austin DeVoe to four escapes, eventually taking the 10-4 win.
In a hard fought battle at 133-pounds, 11th-ranked junior Paul Collum met with 12th-ranked Ricky LaForge. Landing the early takedown in the first period, Collum and LaForge went scoreless in period two. Between LaForge's first period reversal and third period takedown and riding time, LaForge came ahead with a 4-2 win. Together, the 125- and 133-pound decisions by Hofstra gave the team its early 6-0 lead.
Coming off of a loss against Michigan State's Andy Simmons in the Tiger's first dual of the day, senior J.P. Reese, ranked eighth in the nation, brought pressure to the mat against John Manarck at 141-pounds. With two near falls in the first period, and an escape in the second, Reese blanked Manarck 6-0. The third period saw more action as Reese scored his second escape and first takedown, while Manarck took a two-point nearfall and takedown. Riding time helped Reese to a 10-4 decision, while the Tiger win helped bring the team within three points of Hofstra.
Senior Jeremy Spates (sixth-ranked) took his second major decision of the day with a final score of 13-5. Wrestling against Chris Vendruska at 149-pounds, Spates had five takedowns for 10 points, plus two escapes to make 12. Riding time helped Spates take the 13 point win.
2-0 on the day, fourth-ranked senior Kenny Burleson matched with No. 13 Paul Sieman for the Tigers fifth dual. Scoreless through the first period, Burleson brought the first point to the board scoring an escape in the second period. With a takedown in the third, Burleson won the match 3-2, bringing the team score to 10-6.
Junior All-American Tyron Woodley (No. 5) made his first appearance of the day on the mat. Paired with seventh ranked Ralph Everett, Woodley was unable to hold onto his second period one point lead as Everett took a takedown and scored two final points in the third period. With Everett's 4-1 win, the Pride was within one point of Missouri (10-9).
Sixth-ranked redshirt freshman Ben Askren helped Missouri to a four point team lead. With three takedowns and an escape, Askren held eighth-ranked Noel Thompson of Hofstra to a 9-3 score.
The second Missouri redshirt freshman to head to the center circle was 184-pound Matt Pell. In a back and forth battle of points, Pell came out on top with a 6-4 win over Brad Christie. Pell's six points came in the way of two takedowns and two escapes, while Christie managed two escapes and one takedown.
Sophomore Jeff Foust (No. 10) took center circle of mat three against second ranked Chris Skretkowicz. Unable to score, Skretkowicz dropped Foust in an 8-0 major decision.
With the score at 16-13 in favor of Missouri, senior Mike Whitehead stepped up to the challenge of taking Missouri into its third championship dual of the day. Wrestling against Dan Garay the two were scoreless through the second period. With two minutes on the clock, Whitehead scored two escapes and a takedown, and was awarded one point for riding time and one point for mat misconduct. In a final 6-0 score, Whitehead's decision was enough to keep Missouri on top 19-13.
Taking on seventh-ranked Penn State, Missouri is 1-2-1 with the Nittany Lions. The Tigers found their last win over PSU during the 2001-02 season at the Virginia Duals (19-16). The two schools last met at the National Duals during the 1992-93 season under then MU head coach Wes Roper. The pairing brought about a 33-12 Missouri loss in the opening dual of the tournament. Missouri and Penn State found their only tie during the 1980-81 season under MU head coach Bob Kopnisky at Penn State (22-22). It was the first match between the two schools. With the exception of the first two Missouri, Penn State matchups, each time the two schools have met, they have come with different head coaches.
